Resistance Range Comparison

Resono Pro Dynamic: 1.5 - 30 cmH2O
Resono Go Dynamic: 1.5 - 30 cmH2O
Resono Dynamic: 1.5 - 13 cmH2O
3mm Singing Straw Fixed: 16 cmH2O
6mm Paper Straw Fixed: 4 cmH2O
13mm Silicone Tube Fixed: 0.5 cmH2O

The chart above visualises the range of resistance (also known as "back pressure") that different types of straw can provide. Most have a fixed resistance due to their fixed aperture and length, but the Resono is dynamic and can change resistance.

Many singers use regular drinking straws for SOVT exercises, but here’s the catch: A fixed-length and diameter straw will only ever provide one level of resistance. This means it may not be suitable for all singers or all vocal training situations. Having an adjustable resistance system allows for more precise control over vocal load, just like adjusting weights at the gym.

Small but MIGHTY

From one small device comes so much power. With our patented device, you get a huge back-pressure range, from 1.5 cmH2O to 30 cmH2O and beyond (if using the VARA).

Research

Academic research has shown that SOVT exercises create a balance between subglottal and supraglottal pressures, which helps optimize vocal fold vibration. Studies indicate that these exercises can:

  • Reduce phonation threshold pressure, making phonation easier.
  • Improve vocal economy, allowing singers to produce sound with less effort.
  • Decrease vocal fold collision forces, reducing strain and potential vocal damage.
  • Enhance resonance and projection without forcing the voice.

A 2006 study by Ingo Titze found that phonating through a narrow tube increases intraoral pressure, helping to stabilize the vocal folds and encourage efficient vocal fold oscillation. This means that using the right level of resistance in straw phonation can significantly impact vocal training and therapy outcomes.

Resistance, Visualised.

We've run 1000s of simulations exploring the vocal benefits of our devices, and we've built a brand new mathematical model that allows us to accurately determine the back-pressure offered by any configuration of the Resono, singing straw, or regular straw.

What does "back-pressure" do?

Back-pressure (technically “supraglottal pressure”, interchangeable with "resistance") is the gentle cushion of air that builds up above the vocal folds when the vocal tract is partially closed by a straw.

That extra pressure helps to lower phonation-threshold pressure (the effort needed to start the folds vibrating) and reduces collision forces each time they meet.

At the same time, the narrow exit raises acoustic inertance - think of it as an elastic “push–pull” that feeds energy back to the folds - so they vibrate more efficiently and with less muscular strain. The net effect is easier onset, more stable tone and a lower risk of fatigue or injury.

The Resono Pro lets you dial in exactly the right resistance for your voice, giving you the sweet-spot of back-pressure without guessing or juggling multiple straws.

Common Mistakes

Mistake Why It's A Problem Quick Fix
Air leaks at lips or nose Lowers back-pressure and defeats the purpose. Seal lips firmly around the straw and pinch the nose closed to check flow.
Jaw or lip tension Adds constriction and raises effort. Keep jaw neutral and cheeks relaxed.
Using the same resistance for every task One size doesn’t fit all ranges/dynamics. Match resistance to the goal and don't be afraid to increase or decrease as your voice demands.
Pushing too much air Might cause excess tension or build too much pressure. Relax/back off the flow. You can try using some water or the Spinner to visualise the output.

Sing like never before

Rayvox tools are designed to help you train your voice, and reach new vocal heights, build muscle strength, coordination, and efficiency that lasts a lifetime.

You can truly build the voice you want: eliminate voice cracks, achieve better vocal fold closure, avoid strain and vocal tension, improve your breath control, and sustain notes for longer and more efficiently. All from one device.

You can even do it on the train!

Love this love this love this!!!

It’s my favourite part of the Resono pro v2 package and what I use the most. So really glad it’s now sold separately.

I’ve noticed an ease in singing and easier access to higher notes since incorporating this into my routine.

Looking forward to also trying the other components.
Have recommended this to a few of my fellow singers. Thanks ☺️

Discreet and effective device.

I like the fact that this is so discreet to use, compared to my much loved straw.. It's taking a little time to get the progressions right, but it's worth working with it and I feel like my voice is already benefiting from the twice daily workouts.
