Why You Need A Daily Vocal Warm Up Routine

If you're like me and you sing for a living then the most important thing you can do is look after your vocal health and take care of your instrument. I know that sounds cheesy but seriously - I see so many singers who are unable to practice their singing skills as often as they would like or skip their important warmups all together, and when they do eventually find the time to look after their voice it's only for a short period of time. This can be frustrating because with less frequent practice sessions and skipping vocal warmups, you won't be developing the voice you want, you may not notice the progress that you are making, and you won't be singing as efficiently as you could be.

Take the example of an athlete - they will do a warmup before each and every training session, as well as before their main athletic task. Why? Because it gets blood flowing, ensures you're not stressing your body before the work begins, and prepares you for the task ahead. This practice helps instill the necessary habits, technique, coordination, flexibility, strength, and mindset needed for being an athlete. Sound familiar? Singers are athletes too! If you don't already do one, you need to be warming up your voice before putting it to work! It's the best way to ensure you maintain your voice and keep it healthy. That includes doing a general daily warmup, even if you only plan on talking and not singing!

A Challenge

I know these types of things always seem like a chore, but here's my challenge to you - try working through the above 20 Minute Vocal Warm Up Routine just a couple of times a week at first. Load up the YouTube video or Spotify playlist when you're getting ready in the morning, or washing the dishes, or driving to work - something like that. Make it part of your routine. Then, once you're a little more used to it, begin to set aside some dedicated time to look after your voice. Increment things daily until you get a really good routine going. Trust me, it will be worth it.

Happy singing!
